A Quinta Casal Monteiro, S.A., foi fundada pelos herdeiros de Luís José Braamcamp de Mello Breyner Cardoso de Menezes, comummente conhecido por Dom Luís de Margaride, descendente paterno dos Condes de Margaride e materno dos Condes de Sobral, nascido em Santarém no ano de 1903.

Em 1928, Dom Luís assumiu a direcção das actividades agrovinícolas nas propriedades familiares, às quais dedicou mais de cinquenta anos de estudo, trabalho de investigação e prática no cultivo da vinha e nas técnicas enológicas.

Dom Luís de Margaride deixou uma vasta obra, tendo sido galardoado com vários prémios e consagrações, tais como a de sócio de honra do Office International du Vin.

Hoje a Quinta Casal Monteiro, S.A.preserva no seu património, uma tradição de mais de 150 anos, nos quais, se foi sucessivamente passando o testemunho, no respeito pelo ancestral, mas com ambição de progresso, inovação e modernidade.

É esta herança de dinamismo e inovação que os actuais descendentes continuam conseguindo para os seus vinhos a permanência e a expansão nos mercados.

Os vinhos sob a marca Dom Hermano provêm exclusivamente de uvas produzidas na vinha da Quinta do Casal Monteiro com 60 hectares, que dispõe de cepas das seguintes castas:

Brancas
Fernão Pires, Trincadeira das Pratas, Arinto
e Chardonnay.

Tintas
Castelão, Trincadeira, Baga, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Aragonês, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sirah, Pinot Noir e Merlot.

The Estate
Today the estate preserves in its heritage a family tradition of more than 150 years, during which the various generations handed over the baton successively, with respect for ancestral knowledge but with ambition for progress, innovation and the will for modernity.
It is this dynamic and innovative heritage that the current offspring received and continue applying, whilst maintaining and expanding the domestic and
international markets for their wines.
The company that owns the estate only utilize first class locally produced grapes to produce high quality wines marketed under the brand Dom Hermano.

The Terroir
The Estate is inserted in the Almeirim sub-region, in accordance with the areas set by the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (Vine and Wine Institute) to grant the seal guaranteeing the “Ribatejo” Controlled Origin Denomination (D.O.C). Located in the heart of the Province of Ribatejo – a region known for its
long tradition in wines, and especially for the quality of its white wines – the estate has an area of more than 55 hectares of wired vines, planted in alluvial
sandy clay soil, the best in the Ribatejo Marshland. This type of soil is unique in the country and characteristic of this sub-Mediterranean temperate
climate, due to its proximity to the river Tagus, which provides these wines with their own specific identity.
The wine tradition in this region is prior to the foundation of Portugal, and D. Afonso Henriques, our first King, already made reference to its wines
when granting the city of Santarém its charter in 1170.
The grape varieties planted in the estate are some of those which are traditionally found in the Ribatejo Marshland, amongst which Fernão Pires, Arinto and Trincadeira das Pratas from white grape vines; and
Baga, Castelão (also known as João Santarém in the region, when labelled VQPRD – Quality Wine Produced in a Demarcated Region) or Touriga
Nacional, from red grape vines.
Among the planted vines, there are other allowed varieties which have adapted excellently to the soil, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The vines were planted with the use of graft bearers with guaranteed origin and sanity according to the pre-determined agroclimatic
conditions, and later grafted in separate areas, with the achieved objective of obtaining best quality grapes in accordance with the wine to be produced.
